The Association for the Multiple Impaired Blind is a not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to promoting community integration and participation of people who are blind or visually impaired and have multiple disabilities, by providing opportunities for community living, training and support. Currently owning four homes in the region, the association embarked upon creating a new long term care home that could be utilized as a prototype for the State of New Jersey.

The goals of this project are simple in concept yet challenging in practice. To create a home which is fully accessible for long term care, without the budget of a large institution, as well as a flexible plan that can be modified for different site conditions and is able to relate an 8 bedroom home within a typical residential community.

A simple T shaped modular plan allows for flexibility both in the site conditions and program accommodations. Amenities such as grab bars in wider than normal corridors, handicap bathrooms, ramps, outlets at the belt line, lower sill heights and bedrooms large enough for wheelchairs not only make this a home, but a comfortable place to live. Strategic use of color was implemented throughout the 4,700 s.f. facility for those residents with partial sight. To support the various medical conditions of the residents, a nurse’s station and medication storage was included, along with small offices for the full time staff. Key to the project was CONANT ARCHITECT’S efforts to maximize the buying power of the organization's hard earned donation dollars, through the selection of durable, attractive and economical finishes.
