T-Systems is Deutsche Telekom’s business customer brand and a leading service provider with 52,000 employees world-wide.  Previously based in midtown Manhattan , T-Systems required new facilities to accommodate a new data center as well as additional growth for their expanding US presence.

Working hand-in-hand with 5 property managers, CONANT ARCHITECTS provided an in-depth analysis of the client’s real estate options and programming.  With potential locations in New York and New Jersey , and with demanding technical requirements for the planned data center, evaluation of each site’s qualitative and quantitative properties was key to understanding the potential benefits.  The landmarked AT&T Long Distance Building at 32 Avenue of the America ’s was selected as the optimal location due to the extensive infrastructure and financial incentives of investing in lower Manhattan at the time.

T-System’s vision was clear: “we represent and sell technology solutions and our space should reflect our business, but not alienate us from our parent company, Deutsche Telekom.”  Understated use of corporate colors on a single column, reception upholstery and random panel fabrics created a visual link between the two companies.  “Raw” elements such as the concrete floor and exposed ceiling were left in place to create a hi-tech experience in the reception area, while traditional workstations, carpeting and ceilings were incorporated into the office layout.  Radial lighting and conference space softly intersect the square reception area where simple company graphics line 16’ x 16’ of a partition and a sculptured wood feature wall sits behind the glass reception desk.  Modern classic furniture and lighting provide sanctuary for a visitor to read literature about the company.  However, office layouts and system technology were a function of this company’s need to grow in the U.S. marketplace. Innovative use of materials showed fiscal responsibility by producing a quality space under anticipated construction costs.
